I visited the Duomo last summer and was quite over-awed by it all. I’d studied it during my History of Art A-Level, but really it was the crypt that worked its magic on me. Pretty boring at first glance, but then a skull in a niche, a tomb with an inscription of hedgehogs, and really just the thought of how ancient and beyond us it all was. Though I’m not a Catholic, I ended up buying a rosary bracelet because I found it so crushingly beautiful and felt I had to take something with me. I’ve not really been able to wear it though, it just sits in my drawer now. Being beautiful. I saw exactly the same braclet in Canterbury Cathedral this summer, and feel slightly released from the spell.
